Background
According to the foundation, Gurungs migrated from western Nepal and settled in Rumjatar around 1773–74 AD, during Prithvi Narayan Shah’s unification of Nepal. Their predominantly Buddhist culture and the Gurung language were gradually lost over time; the gumba project aims to educate the community in Buddhist philosophy and to develop Rumjatar as a cultural and tourist centre of eastern Nepal.
